False Starts & Self-Doubt in Business: Building My Business Back Stronger
Welcome back! It's been a minute since you've heard anything from me on the Brazenist platforms. Today, I'm sharing a little update on what's going on with Brazenist, what's coming in the future, and why you might not want to jump off this crazy train.
You can listen to the 15 minute episode or just read through the blog post below. Choose your adventure...
I have five things I want to share with you so let's dive in.
Thank you. If you're reading this, it means you've been subscribed to the podcast and email list since the beginning. You've had a front row seat to this very messy, winding and fortuitous journey that is Brazenist and me trying to figure out my next business endeavor.
I know it hasn't always been pretty and perhaps a little confusing, so I just want to say thank you. Thank you for hanging in there with me - and at the very least being curious enough to see what ridiculous thing I do next.
I'm relaunching Brazenist with a clean slate. That's right. I am coming back strong with this brand even after a lot of false starts and self-doubt. I've been doing ALL the soul-searching the past year and at the end of the day, I still believe in the ethos of Brazenist, why I started it, and what I want it to be. It's been over a year since I've done anything with the brand.
The cool thing about building something online and starting slow and steady is that you can experiment. Because most people are going to forget what you've done pretty soon after you've said it, you have the flexibility to pivot, refocus, change your mind, or regroup when things aren't feeling right or if you're just not in a place or season of life to do the thing you thought you could do.
That's what was going on with me.
You can shift gears, take a pause, whatever you need without causing much of a kerfuffle. This is especially true when your audience is small. If only your biggest fans and early adopters are paying attention, they are much more likely to give you the benefit of the doubt, more grace, and more leeway to figure things out as you go.
Over the past few months, I've been diving deep into what I truly want to be doing with my own time, how I see the next 10 years playing out for me personally, how I see myself showing up in work, in life, and online. And it all boiled down to Brazenist. So I have some new branding (all done by me), a new website (all on Kajabi), and a new confidence and optimism that I'm moving in the right direction. Click around and let me know what you think.
So what can you expect moving forward from this podcast? The focus of Brazenist and this show is all around creating location-independence, closing the wealth gap, and winning back your time through the power of an online passive income. Whether you want to create a side hustle, build a full-time online business, or create a new revenue stream for your existing business - I want to teach you everything I've learned since 2009 about building and growing businesses and brands online.
I passionately believe that 2020 showed us all that we must diversify our income streams. It's not a "nice to have." It's not even a "need to do it, but I'll do it later" thing. No, it's a “MUST DO IT RIGHT NOW.” Personally and professionally, none of us can afford to put all of our eggs in one basket. We need to find new ways to secure our financial future and our financial present.
I saw this play out in the youth travel industry where my other business - Inside Study Abroad - operates. It became glaringly obvious that most organizations in that field had been banking on one source of revenue: Sending students on educational programs around the world. That is the one product in which most organizations earned income and they expected that to be around forever.
But almost overnight in late February and early March, all of these organizations and universities saw their linchpin income source just disappear, just vanish with no other option insight. And so as a result, international education and youth travel was decimated. We had massive layoffs in the field and everyone was left scrambling for work and for new ways to make a living, make an income or keep their employees on payroll, etc.
Here's the deal: I don't want you feeling like you just got mugged the next time there's a big global crisis or an economic downturn. I don't want any of you sitting there reading to this right now feeling like, "oh my god, it happened again. I don't know what to do!" I want you to start building something now in preparation for the next big hit.
That's exactly what happened to me in the 2008-2009 economic crisis. I was job searching during that time and so how hard it was for everyone to find work. I eventually did land a job, but that's also what motivated me to start Inside Study Abroad. I didn't know what it would become or have a real strategy. I just knew I had to start investing in my own asset.
Back in 2009 it was just a blog, a little side hustle that I worked on from time to time. But over time as I learned, experimented, and gained traction, it has become a brand and an asset that has turned into my financial security - even in a global pandemic. And it's now the platform where my team and I get to help people and add value to our niched and industry.
I'm so grateful that I did it then. But 2021 could be that time for you. This is the time for all of you to be thinking, "what can I create now that could pay off dividends to me later?" Whether it's a side hustle, whether it becomes your full-time business, or whether your existing business now has a little breathing room, because you diversified your income streams through the power of an online, passive income business model.
My mission with this next chapter of Brazenist is to teach you everything you need to know in order to build an online, passive income stream or income business. I want you to work less while earning more. I want you to be able to travel often if you want to, and live your version of a brazen, audacious, and badass life.
I want you to be able to bust through any limiting beliefs and barriers that you have put up in front of you or your community or your society, your family or friends have told you, "no, you can't do those things."
I want you to be empowered to make those choices on your own and decide what is the best version of life for you. And part of doing that is making sure that you have freedom - freedom of time, freedom of location, freedom of financial independence, and freedom of creativity, to create and do things that fulfill you, that impact the world in some way, and bring joy and happiness to you and your community. I think we all need a little more joy in our lives these days.
Which brings me to Thing #4...
The Brazenist podcast is taking on a new format as a video podcast. I dabbled with this previously but I didn't really have a focused strategy and was just posting random videos to my personal YouTube channel and sharing the audio to the podcast feed. There wasn't really any rhyme or reason or real strategy to it.
Moving forward I'm getting much more focused and intentional on how I'm preparing and sharing content each week focusing more on the tools, strategies, tactics, mindset you need to take action and find success with your online business.
I don't want you to be passive consumers of information. I want you to feel capable and prepared to take action. So each week I'll be bringing you episodes all about starting an online business, building an authority brand, growing your income, finding that elusive work-life balance, and mastering your mindset so your entrepreneurial journey can feel intentional, fun, and stress-free.
Each week I want you to feel like you have what you need to start defining, designing, and delivering on your brazen, audacious, and badass life. And you actually feel like, yeah, I am living that brazen life. Of course, I'll also be bringing back interviews with people who are inspiring me, people that I see out there in the online or the offline world that represent the Brazen mission and ethos in their own lives and business.
Make sure you head over to the brand new, dedicated YouTube channel and hit subscribe. You'll be one of the first subscribers and early-adopters on what I hope becomes a thriving community of ambitious, thoughtful game changers around the world. Of course, if you prefer the audio version of the show just subscribe on your favorite podcast player.
To say thank you for hanging out with me for so long, I've been working on a free no nonsense resource for you so you can start taking action TODAY toward making an income online. I want to get this in your hands - it's completely free. It's my 30-Day Online Income Roadmap.
This is a no fluff step-by-step checklist of everything I would do right now to start earning an online income - even with no idea, no audience, no website, no nothing.
Basically, I've broken down and simplified everything I've learned since starting my first business and synthesized it down into what I would do today if I was starting from scratch.
Will it replace your nine to five salary in a month? Probably not.
But it could put a few hundred dollars in your pocket in the next 30 days. And for a lot of us, that would feel really amazing. It will give you that taste of what it feels like to earn an income online and start making income in a way that is divorced from you having a nine to five or having a boss that tells you whether or not you get a raise.
If you had an extra $500 in your pocket, what could that do for your life? Could you send in an extra student loan payment, could you make a dent in your credit card debt, could you go out for a nice dinner with your partner and celebrate life and the world opening up again? There's a lot of wonderful things that you could probably do with $500 bucks and I want you to know how to make that happen in the next 30 days.
So what's next?
Here's a little teaser of the episodes dropping next week:
- The 4 Pillars of A Passive Income Online Business - these are the key drivers of every automated online business and I walk you through each one and how they all work together.
- How to Start An Online Business with Less Than $60 - Starting an online business is super simple and affordable (and guess what - you don't need a website to get started).
- Personal Brand vs Business Brand: Which should you choose when you start your business? - Do you go by your own name or should you choose a brand name and build your business around that? There's no right answer, but I'll break down the pros, cons, and considerations of each option.
And it's all dropping next week.
I hope you'll join me on the next leg of the journey and I can't wait to see the brazen business and life you create for yourself.
